Bruges Christmas Market BreaksBruges is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe with it’s cobbled market squares and preserved medieval buildings stretching out from the city’s numerous canals.
What better time to visit than Winter when the city takes on a fairytale atmosphere. From 23 November to 1 January 2019 Grote Markt (the main square) is transformed into a giant Christmas market with the medieval buildings decorated in Christmas foliage and festive fairy lights looking like gingerbread houses. Wooden chalets and stalls selling handmade gifts, decorations and local delicacies surround a glistening ice rink whilst the food stalls have crisp waffles covered in Belgian chocolate, gingerbreads and gluhwein. Adding to the charm are the horse drawn carriages which offer cosy rides (woolen rugs supplied) through the cobbled stone lanes and city’s squares.
Bruges has two Christmas markets and the smaller one is just a short walk from Grote Markt in Simon Stenplein Square which is lined with trees covered in twinkling fairy lights.
Bruges Christmas markets may not be as large or spawling as some other European cities but they are possibly the most atmospheric.
