
Location: The Canary Islands are located 100 km off the northwestern coast of Africa. Seven major islands are in the archipelago divided into two provinces. Las Palmas comprises of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzorote. Santa Cruz de Tenerife of El Hiero, La Gomera, La Palma and Tenerife.
Tourism: Represents an important source of revenue for the Spanish people. With over 44 million visitors a year coming to Spain and it's Mediterranean islands it is now one of the leading tourist destinations.
Major Attractions:-
Beaches - Excellent year round climate makes this a great destination. Most beaches are of black volcanic sand although at Los Cristianos and the Playa Fanabe area of Playa de las Americas they have imported golden sand from the Sahara to create beautiful palm lined beaches.
Interior - Well worth visiting is Mount Teide, one of the world's largest volcanic craters and the highest peak in Spain. The island is divided in two with the south being dry and desert like whilst the north is green and covered in banana plantations. Rural hillside villages, luna landscapes and plantations make a trip round the island an enjoyable experience.
Watersports - Playa de las Americas is a mecca for watersports including scuba diving, water skiing, jet skis, banana boats, paracending, pedaloes and swimming.
Nightlife: For non stop entertainment till the early hours head for Playa de las Americas. For a little less lively environment head for Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes. A more restrained and sophisticated atmosphere is to be found in the north at Puerto de la Cruz.
